A closed and common orbit11/30/2022 For me, I read the first book five years ago, and the long delay before starting this did not impact on my enjoyment or understanding at all. This is the second book in the Wayfarers series, but can be read as a stand-alone. But overall it was a beautiful book about finding yourself and finding your family. I feel like the ending would be even stronger if we got to spend even a few more pages with the characters in those final moments of the story. I think my only complaint about this book is how quickly it rushes into the epilogue. And yet every time the pov switched I couldn't wait until we could go back to following the journey of the little girl who was stronger than everything standing in her way, and how easy it was to become increasingly attached to her bond with Owl and terrified of where that particular plot line would lead. It's amazing how heart wrenching all those flashbacks were when we knew exactly where the story would end. This book is split between two POVs, and as much as I enjoyed Sidra's journey of discovering who she is it definitely felt like the real heart of the story for me was in Pepper's perspective. Where the first book was more of a fast paced adventure story, this sequel felt more interested in slow paced exploration of what it meant to be sapient, what it took to find yourself when you felt so completely unprepared for the big, wide world awaiting you. I think that was the reason why I struggled a little at the beginning of this book. I definitely felt a little hesitant when I started reading this book, I got attached to Wayfarer's crew and I didn't want to completely switch to a different set of characters, even if a story about an AI finding her way as a new being in a completely unfamiliar to her world sounded very intriguing. Oof this was such an emotional read, it's been a few hours since I've finished it and I still feel a little overwhelmed from all the feelings the last half of the story puts the reader through.
